HBIS & BHP Joining Hands to Reduce Carbon Emission

Addressing climate change is the common cause of mankind. March 5, World Steel Association Chairman, HBIS CCP & Group Chairman Yu Yong and BHP Billiton CEO Mike Henry had a video meeting to discuss carbon reduction, climate change and closer cooperation in low carbon metallurgy. In the meeting, both parties signed a MOU of dealing with the Climate Changes. HBIS Vice President Wang Xindong, BHP Chief Business Officer Vandita Pant sign the document on behalf of each other. HBIS Vice President Liu Jian hosted the video ceremony.  



HBIS is one of leading steel manufacturers in the globe and BHP is a renowned mineral miner and raw material supplier to world steel industry, both have built a long term and sustainable cooperation. The both have realized that climate change poses to the steel industry and its value chain, both agree to cope with climate changes and take their responsibilities together.

Yu Yong said the signature of MOU showed that parties were standing on a height of Promoting the building of a community of shared future for mankind and building a green & low carbon industrial chain. They will jointly fight the climate changes and take their responsibilities. They will deepen their strategic cooperation and coordinated development. In the General Debate of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Chairman Xi Jinping made the promise that the Chinese carbon emission will peak before 2030, and before 2060, neutralcarbon will be achieved. This is a guideline of our cooperation in dealing with climate changes. HBIS is currently applying the hydrogen steel making technologies and seeking revolutionary procedures and breakthrough of low carbon technologies to support the sustainable low carbon and green development of Chinese and world steel industry. Steel will make the world a better place in the future and HBIS is willing to work with BHP to pursue the low carbon and recycling innovations and applications. We will make green steel with green raw materials and contribute to the green and low-carbon development of the steel industry chain and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Mike Henry said BHP had been working with HBIS for a long time and was glad to sign this strategic agreement to explore a new path to cut carbon emission. The global decarbonization process requires teamwork thinking and groups’ efforts, by working with HBIS and other key players in the industry, we could find more solutions to cut emissions. One of possible path is to adopt BHP products in hydrogen steel making technologies, which could complement resources of different projects, and promote the future development of traditional blast furnace carbon reduction and carbon capure technologies, to assist the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain to achieve emission reduction. 

With this MOU in place, BHP will invest USA$15 million in three years to work with HBIS to study green house gas reduction technologies and paths, including hydrogen direct reduction technology, slag treatment and recycling technology, and a higher lump consumption rate. In 2019, BHP announced that they would invest USA$400 million to develop climate technologies. And this MOU with HBIS is one integral part of this project and important step of BHP connecting its upper and down stream suppliers and clients. It will help its partners to find their working goal and assist Chinese steel industry to meet its profound goal of carbon neutralization before 2060.
